Permissive Tax Exemptions

The District of Tumbler Ridge Council may, by bylaw and subject to specific requirements, exempt eligible properties from municipal property taxes. These exemptions must be adopted on or before October 31 each year.

To promote fair and consistent treatment of all applicants, Council adopted the TR-49 – Permissive Tax Exemption Policy  on February 5, 2018. This policy sets out the eligibility criteria and the application process for non-profit and charitable organizations seeking an exemption.

Application Details & Deadlines

In Tumbler Ridge, exemptions are currently granted for terms of up to three years. As a result, approved organizations are not required to reapply annually, but only once during each application cycle.

Newly Eligible Organizations/Properties: Organizations or properties not currently included in the bylaw may apply in any year. Applications for the upcoming year must be submitted by June 15 each year.

Currently Exempted Organizations/Properties: If your organization and specific property are already listed in the current consolidated bylaw (see list below), the exemption remains in effect until the end of 2027 and no reapplication is required in 2026. The next application cycle will take place in 2027, and a reminder will be provided at that time.

Please note that if an organization acquires, occupies, or begins using a new property that is not specifically included in the current bylaw, a new application is still required for that property.

Organizations Using District Properties: Municipal properties that are leased under a Lease Agreement or occupied under a Licence of Occupation are subject to taxation. If your organization wishes to receive a permissive tax exemption for that property, an application is required.

Organizations operating a municipal facility under an Operating Agreement are not subject to taxation and do not need to apply.

Current Exemptions (2025–2027 Term)

The following organizations are currently exempt from taxation under the District of Tumbler Ridge Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw No. 741, 2024 (and amending Bylaw No. 756, 2025). If your organization and property are on this list, your exemption is active through 2027.
