Project Overview
The Tumbler Ridge Trails & Destination Management Strategy (TRTDMS) project is a collaborative initiative between the District of Tumbler Ridge (DTR) and the Tumbler Ridge Outdoor Recreation Association (TRORA). This strategy will guide the sustainable development, management, and promotion of the community’s trail network and tourism assets, while ensuring environmental conservation and long-term economic benefits.
To shape this strategy, the project team will work with the community to:
• create an inventory of existing trails and recreation assets;
• identify priority trails and areas for different user groups and visitors;
• determine what infrastructure is needed to support long-term use; and
• explore opportunities to attract visitors to Tumbler Ridge.
What is a Destination Management Strategy?
A Destination Management Strategy is a long-term plan that helps a community develop, promote, and manage its tourism assets in a coordinated and sustainable way. It considers trails, infrastructure, and services and outlines how to develop and sustain these assets over time. The strategy looks at things like quality of life and economic benefits to ensure that tourism develops in a way that respects the environment, reflects local culture, and benefits visitors, residents, and the broader community.
Public Engagement Opportunities
Public engagement is an important part of this process to create a shared vision and priorities which will guide Tumbler Ridge over the next 20 years. Engagement activities will aim to bring diverse voices and perspectives to the table. The project will involve residents, the broader community of Tumbler Ridge, Indigenous Nations, interest groups, and the formation of an Advisory Committee. Throughout the project, there will be a variety of engagement opportunities to collect feedback that will inform the final strategy.
