Here, you’ll find all the information you need to get to know the candidates running for the one Councillor position in this election.

The nomination period closed on March 7, 2025, and we are pleased to introduce the candidates who will be on the ballot for the April 2025 By-Election. Below, you’ll find their names, as well as details about how to access nomination documents and the process for challenging a nomination, if applicable.

📢 DECLARATION OF CANDIDATES 📢

The nomination period for one Councillor position in the April 2025 By-Election closed on March 7, 2025, at 4:00 pm. You can find the Declaration of Candidates here: Declaration

The candidates for the April 2025 By-Election are:

David Thompson

Donald McPherson

Keith Bertrand

Natasha Dougherty


Nomination documents (Form C2 and CS2 only) must be available for public inspection at the District of Tumbler Ridge Town Hall (305 Iles Way) from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, excluding statutory holidays, until 30 days after the official election results are declared.

Any person is entitled to receive a copy of the nomination documents free of charge.

Only Form C2 (CS2) and the Statement of Disclosure required under the Financial Disclosure Act are available for public inspection. Other non-mandatory forms included in the nomination documents should not be available for public inspection, as they are not considered “nomination documents.”

Any person who inspects or accesses nomination documents must not use the information except for purposes indicated in the LGA, VC, SA, or LECFA.                                                                                                      

 Deadline: March 11, 2025, at 4:00 PM

⚖ WHO CAN CHALLENGE:
A nomination may be challenged by:
 ✔ An elector of Tumbler Ridge
 ✔ Another nominee in the same election
 ✔ The Chief Election Officer (CEO)

HOW TO CHALLENGE:
A challenge must be filed between the time nomination documents are delivered and 4:00 PM on the 4th day after the nomination period ends.

An application must be made to the Provincial Court (not the BC Supreme Court), and the challenge may be based on one or more of the following reasons:
 ✅ The person is not qualified to be nominated or elected
 ✅ The nomination was not made in accordance with LGA s. 86 to s. 89 (VC s. 43 to s. 45)
 ✅ The usual name of the nominee written in the nomination documents is not their usual name

The CEO must challenge the nomination of any person whose name appears on the candidate disqualification list.

The document filed with the court to commence a challenge must:
 📌 Set out the facts supporting the challenge
 📌 Be supported by an affidavit sworn by the person making the challenge

The person making the challenge must immediately notify the challenged nominee and the CEO (if the CEO is not making the challenge).

Within 24 hours of filing the application, the challenger must serve both the nominee and the CEO (if the CEO is not making the challenge) with:
 📄 Copies of the document filed with the court
 📄 The accompanying affidavit
 📄 A notice stating the time set for the hearing
