🏫 District of Tumbler Ridge April By-Election 2025 🗳️
Following the determination of official results, the Chief Election Officer (CEO) for the District of Tumbler Ridge declared elected Keith Bertrand to the position of councillor.
Determination of Official Results Process
Further to the public notice given on April 14, 2025, all candidates or their representative were invited to attend a determination of the official election results process which took place on April 15, 2025 at 3:30 pm at Town Hall. In attendance were the Chief Election Officer, the Deputy Chief Election Officer, one Election Official, and the four candidates.
In front of the candidates, the CEO and election officials conducted the determination process as required by local election legislation. The process consisted of opening the sealed election material envelopes, verifying the list of electors, of all ballot accounts for all voting opportunities (advanced voting, mail ballots and general election day), recounting all valid votes, and reconsidering any rejected ballots.
A full recount was conducted, and no discrepancies were found. Of the three ballots that were initially rejected under section 139(2) and section 139(4)(c) of the Local Government Act, one remained rejected. Following the receipt of legal advice, two previously rejected ballots were accepted to give effect to the voters’ intention where that intention was clear despite technical non-compliance.
Final Results
The revised ballot account put candidate Keith Bertrand as the winner with the most votes by a margin of 1 vote.
The byelection turnout saw 328 electors register to vote.

Background
On January 20, 2025, Councillor Ken Klikach resigned from his position as a Councillor for the District of Tumbler Ridge. In accordance with the Local Government Act, Council appointed the Chief Election Officer and Deputy Chief Election Officer on February 3, 2025, to oversee the upcoming By-Election.
