Statement from the District of Tumbler Ridge Regarding the Memorial at the Roman Walkway

The District of Tumbler Ridge is aware of the concerns being shared regarding the temporary memorial at the Roman Walkway.

We recognize that the information some families and community members received may have caused hurt and concern and may not have reflected the District's intentions. For that, we are deeply sorry.

Over the past several months, the District has been working with organizations and professionals supporting our community's recovery. Based on the guidance we received, we believed it may be appropriate to begin planning a future transition of the temporary memorial while ensuring that those who were lost, their families, and all those affected continue to be honoured with dignity and respect.

It is now clear, after listening to families and hearing from our community, that this is not the right time.

Effective immediately, the District is pausing any plans related to transitioning the temporary memorial.

We recognize that this memorial holds deep meaning for many people and that there are different perspectives about its future. We are committed to taking the time needed to listen to families and those most directly affected before considering any future steps.

Our intention has never been to diminish the significance of this place or the memories it represents. When the time is right, any future transition would be carried out with great care and respect. Memorial items would be carefully removed, respectfully cremated where appropriate, and preserved until they can be incorporated into a permanent memorial. They would not be discarded.

We have reached out directly to the families to apologize, clarify our intentions, and invite their feedback. Those conversations will continue, and their voices will help guide the path forward.

We recognize that conversations about the events of February 10, 2026, and the memorial may bring up difficult emotions for some members of our community. If you or someone you know needs support, information about local mental health and wellness resources is available at: www.districtoftumblerridge.ca/p/community-supports.

The temporary memorial is a place of love, grief, remembrance, and reflection. The District remains committed to approaching any future decisions with compassion, humility, and respect. We thank everyone who has shared their thoughts with us as we continue this important work together.
