GOVERNOR GENERAL TO VISIT TUMBLER RIDGE

Tumbler Ridge, BC – The District of Tumbler Ridge acknowledges the upcoming visit of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, from April 27 to April 29, 2026.

This return visit reflects an ongoing commitment to walk alongside the Tumbler Ridge community as it continues to navigate the impacts of the tragedy on February 10. The visit provides an opportunity for Her Excellency to spend time in the community, listen to those impacted, and recognize the care and support people continue to show one another during this time.

“On behalf of Council and the District, we are grateful to Her Excellency for returning to Tumbler Ridge,” said Mayor Darryl Krakowka. “Her presence reinforces that our community is not alone, and that the care, compassion, and resilience shown here continue to be seen and supported.”

During her time in Tumbler Ridge, the Governor General will meet with a range of community members, including students, educators, health care providers, first responders, and others who have played an important role in supporting the community. The visit will also include time spent with those providing mental health supports and learning more about services available in the community.

Due to the nature of the visit and the importance of maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for those participating, most engagements will be private and closed to the public.

A brief outdoor welcome at Town Hall on Monday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. will be open for media photo opportunity (outside only). Media are asked to coordinate directly with the Rideau Hall Press Office at media@gg.ca.

At Town Hall, the Governor General’s flag will be flown on April 27 to mark her presence. During this time, the Canadian flag will be temporarily lowered. On April 28, the Governor General’s flag will be removed, and the Canadian flag will be reinstated and lowered to half-mast in observance of the National Day of Mourning.

The District recognizes that this visit may bring forward a range of emotions for community members. Supports remain available, and individuals are encouraged to access services in whatever way feels right for them.

Further details regarding the Governor General’s itinerary are available through the official Rideau Hall release.
